Embedded Linux has become the dominant platform for complex IoT, industrial and communications products, yet finding engineers with genuine depth in this area remains one of the most consistently challenging briefs we receive.
The core difficulty is that Embedded Linux engineering sits at the intersection of several disciplines: low-level C programming, Linux kernel internals, build systems (Yocto, Buildroot), device drivers and often board bring-up and BSP development. Engineers who are genuinely strong across all of these are rare, and they know it.
What we see in the market:
• Yocto experience is the single most requested skill in our embedded Linux searches (and the pool of candidates with production Yocto project experience is genuinely small • Device driver development (character devices, platform drivers, I2C, SPI, USB) is a differentiating skill that commands a premium • Kernel configuration and customisation experience is valued, full kernel development less commonly required at product company level • Many candidates describe themselves as 'embedded Linux engineers' but have limited experience beyond application-layer development on a pre-built Linux image) screening for depth is critical
